2016 Canadian Junior Championships: Finals

I write this entry sitting behind the show court watching the Boys Under 19 final.  The same two players who played in the 2016 PNW Final (Michael Mehl (AB) vs Rahul Sehrawat (ON)) are doing battle once again before they go to the World in August to represent Canada.

The unfortunate part of this report is that we did not win any Canadian Titles today but we surely put in a good showing.

It is an exciting time for BC.  There are many athletes keeping their eye on the top position and if we continue the hard work our results will get better.  Great job everyone!

And to all the coaches who travel with our kids to this event, thank you!

2016 Canadian Junior Championships Day 3

We have come to the end of a exciting day of squash...the dreams of some are 1 step closer to being realized and like any tournament, reality has set in and it is back to the drawing board to start work for the following year of training.  Before we get to next year lets review today!

At the end of the day we have 4 players that will be playing for national titles: Grace Thomas in the Girls Under 19 Sarah Cao in the Girls Under 13, Mitchel Kahnert in the Boys Under 15 and the unseeded player Gabriel Yun in the Boys Under 13.

Matthew Toth, Lucia Bicknell, John Dempsey and Cynthia Cao all lost their Semi-Final matches today but will step on court tomorrow to play for 3rd / 4th place.

In the Consolations we had many players holding out for a top 8 finish.  Anyone in the Cons SF will potentially be playing two matches tomorrow.  Here are the players looking to finish somewhere in the top 8:
BU 19: Matthew Henderson
BU 17: n/a
BU 15: n/a
BU 13: Joseph Toth and Christian Yuen
GU 19: Megan Picken
GU 17: Brooke Herring and Andrea Michele Toth
GU 15: Anika Kurji
GU 13: Alexandra Brown and Ava Bicknell

Of the 39 players entered in the nationals 17 of them will finish in a top 8 position tomorrow, and we have the opportunity to win 4 national titles.  Keep you fingers crossed for all the BC athletes!

Thank you

2016 Canadian Junior Champs Day 2

What long day of squash and some strong positioning for our players from BC.   Many of the QF matches were played today and we still have 12 player in the main rounds:

Boys:
Starting in the Boys under 13 Gabriel Yun and Jacob Lin continue their seed chopping at the nationals this year.  They both won their spots into the Semi-Final's and will play Saturday's match with a chance to make into the Finals.  In the Boys under 15 both Mitchell Kahnert 3/4 and John Dempsey 2, meet again, this time in the semi-finals of the nationals.  BC is guaranteed a birth in this final.  Meanwhile in the biggest draw of the tournament, Boys Under 17, Ryan Picken continues strong play into the Quarter Finals on Saturday.  In the consolation Sam Scivier has battled his way into Round 5 of the consolation.  He is still 2 matches out of a top 8 finish, although he has his stride back as he beat George Crown, Ontario, who started the tournament as the 3/4 seed.  Matthew Toth and Matthew Henderson will play their Quarter-Final of the Boys under 19 matches on Saturday to stay in the main draw.

Girls:
Sarah Cao and Alexandra Brown played in the girls Under 13 Quarter Final with Sarah moving into the Semi-Final.  In the Girls under 15 Lucia Bicknell moved into the Semi-final winning 2 matches for the day.  In the Girls under 17, Brooke Herring, Cynthia Cao, and Andrea Michele Toth all moved into the Quarter-Finals.  Megan Picken nearly won her Quarter-final match in the Girls under 19 against the 3/4 seed but missed out in the 5th game.  Grace Thomas took here place in the Semi-finals on Saturday with a 3-0 win in the Quarters.

Everyone is looking good...Below you will find the round by round win's and losses for each draw.
